Small tales

" I remember well the first time I went fishing with the guys.'Little sister' was invited to go fishing with her big brothers and dad, all avid fishermen. I was 11 years old and thrilled they would include me. We were on vacation at the beach, and took our poles to a long pier on the bay. I got instructions on how to cast and was very proud that I was able to successfully get my 'daddy' baited hook out into the water. I never before felt such a bond with my siblings.
Well, it didn't take long and I felt a tug on my fishing rod. My dad guided me through the process of working the line so I didn't lose whatever was at the end. I worked the reel with such pride I could have burst. As I reeled the line in and brought my catch up on the dock I faced a long eel squiggling on the wooden deck. I screamed, dropped the rod and ran as fast as I could. My father and brothers were investigating my catch as I headed back to wait for them at the car. I was totally grossed out, cringing as I thought of what was just at my feet.
My first fishing experience was also my last. I decided that bonding with the 'guys' was just not worth that degree of trauma. I found making sand castles was a much more satisfying way to spend my leisure time at the beach." Margie C.

Fish Tails
An article written by Maryland Coastal Bays naturalist/scientist, Roman Jesien, describes a safer hook for fish. The circle hook is described as being able to be backed out of the throat of the fish without hooking the fish's innards. This will give a fish that is not kept, a better chance of survival.
